Mark Taylor (Warwick University and CEPR, UK)
Abstract
Mark Taylor will provide an overview of research on purchasing power parity and exchange rates, beginning in ancient times, progressing through the history of thought on the topic through the Middle Ages, the contribution of the sixteenth century Salamanca School and the later bullionist debates of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and ending with a criticial analysis of the recent and current academic literature. He will also discuss Rogoff's 'purchasing power parity puzzle' and suggest a solution to the puzzle based upon his own recent research.
