Defence Spending and Welfare Spending in Turkey (1924-1998)

Abstract

This study investigates the trade off between Turkish defence spending and welfare spending (spending on health and education) during the Turkish republic era. The purpose of this paper is to assess whether or not defence spending crowds out spending on education and health in Turkey. The main finding of this paper suggests that a positive relation between defence expenditure and health expenditure does exist while no relationships is found between defence expenditure and spending on education.
